My First Month at GIKI Hostel: A Personal Experience

Arrival Day: A Blend of Excitement and Nervousness

Stepping onto the lush campus of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI) for the first time was a moment I'll never forget. The green lawns, state-of-the-art buildings, and the energy of students buzzing around filled me with a sense of excitement. However, lurking beneath that excitement was a twinge of nervousness. Questions about fitting in, making friends, and adjusting to hostel life danced around my mind as I approached the registration desk.

The check-in process was efficient. With my admission letter and ID in hand, I soon found myself holding the keys to Room S35 in Hostel 13. My new home for the first year of university awaited, and with much anticipation, I headed towards it.

Meeting My Roommate: The First Connection

Opening the door to Room S35, I was greeted by a friendly face. Haya, my new roommates, seemed as eager and anxious as I was. We quickly broke the ice with introductions and shared our backgrounds. Our initial conversation flowed smoothly, and we soon found common ground. Setting some basic ground rules for living together, such as maintaining cleanliness and respecting each other's study times and privacy, helped set a positive foundation for our shared living space. At times there were situations we disagreed on but that was just part of hostel life. Students used to go home on university shuttles which operated every weekend. Some weekends when me and my roommate stayed back in the hostel we would have the fun of our life. We would play songs on speakers all night, have a movie marathon, talk about random things. Having an understanding and caring roommate greatly contributes to the hostel and campus life of an individual.

Settling In: Making the Room My Own

Unpacking and arranging my belongings helped make the room feel more personal. I pinned up photos of family and friends, arranged my books and stationery, and set up my study corner. Haya and I decided to explore the campus together that evening. We located key spots like the library, cafeteria, tuc and sports complex, which made the campus feel a bit more familiar.

The First Week: Orientation and Friendships

The first week was a whirlwind of orientation sessions. These were incredibly useful, offering insights into campus life, academic expectations, and available resources. During these sessions, I met other new students, my classmates, who were just as excited and nervous as I was. We all had meetups throughout the week and got to know each other. I even got a friend group of my own! I joined societies and a team for more exposure and communication. These included Project Topi, IEEE and Team Techno in which I had been interested in for a while. Being part of a community with similar interests made the transition easier.

Overcoming Challenges: Homesickness and Roommate Dynamics

Homesickness hit me during the second week. I missed my family and the familiarity of home. Regular video calls with my family helped bridge the gap. Haya and other friends were also supportive, sharing their own experiences and making me feel less alone. Haya and I faced minor conflicts over issues like cleanliness and noise, but open communication and mutual respect helped us resolve them quickly.

A Month of Growth

My first month at GIKI hostel was a mix of excitement, challenges, and growth. Adjusting to a new environment, balancing academics with social life, and learning to live independently were all part of the journey. I made friends who I now consider family and learned valuable lessons about resilience and adaptability. Settling into hostel life at GIKI was the start of an incredible adventure, one that I look forward to continuing.
