A day in my life as a FASTIAN

main image

I vividly recall my first day at FAST-NU, brimming with excitement and enthusiasm. My name is Hashir Rauf, and I am currently in my sophomore year at FAST Lahore, pursuing a degree in Data Science (Class of 2023). Today, I'd like to share my enriching experience of campus life and academic journey at FAST.

Early to bed, Early to Rise

I was taken aback when I first saw my timetable emailed to my domain mail, revealing that I had early morning classes. To my surprise, we had classes starting at 8:30 a.m. nearly three times a week. We often rushed to class, half-asleep, but the instructors were generally quite understanding. If you approached them, they would often push forward the request to change the lecture time.
Looking on the bright side, this schedule has instilled discipline in us and helped us overcome laziness.

Academic Aspect

We often hear that the academic life at FAST is hectic and tough, with peer pressure constantly straining the minds of students. However, this perception isn't entirely accurate. While FAST’s study schedule includes two sessional exams in addition to the semester final exam—unlike other universities that typically have only one sessional exam—the workload is manageable. With two sessionals, the curriculum is divided more evenly, making it less burdensome to prepare within a given period.

Moreover, the numerous quizzes and assignments with short deadlines and substantial content are fairly evaluated. This system mentally prepares you to remain composed under pressure and improves your time management skills. Soon after joining FAST, you'll find yourself adept at managing your time efficiently and applying the divide-and-conquer strategy to nearly all practical problems. FAST’s rigorous routine trains your mind to a point where no situation seems insurmountable.

Early Classes

Additionally, the professors and faculty are highly professional and experts in their fields. Your instructors are often cooperative and open to your suggestions and thoughts, making it easier for you to raise your hand and speak your mind without hesitation during class. They ensure that every student is engaged in the class environment and contributes meaningfully.

Infrastructure

The FAST Lahore Campus spans an impressive 12.5 acres, featuring six main buildings and three cafeterias. The campus is equipped with top-of-the-line course and research lab equipment, ensuring students have access to the best resources for their academic and research pursuits. One of the standout features of the campus is the Justice Gul Mohammad Library, which is renowned as one of the most magnificent university libraries in Pakistan. This state-of-the-art library offers an extensive collection of academic resources and a conducive environment for study and research.

The interior of most blocks on campus is designed with a modern and visually appealing aesthetic. The architecture exudes a sense of calm, providing a serene atmosphere that enhances the overall learning experience. The contemporary design elements, combined with well-thought-out layouts, create an inviting and comfortable space for students to engage in their academic activities.

Social Life and Extracurricular Activities

The most crucial aspect of a student's life is their social life. When I first entered FAST, I struggled significantly with this. I was apprehensive about whether I would be able to find like-minded individuals. Like every other institution, FAST boasts numerous societies that are easily approachable and open for students to join. These societies play a pivotal role in helping you find your place within the campus’s social fabric.

In tandem with the academic pressures, the societies at FAST organize a variety of events that allow students to unwind and engage in activities they are passionate about. Events such as SOFTEC, Business Expressa, Debate Competitions, and SportsFest greatly enhance the student experience, providing a welcome respite from academic rigor. Despite the relatively smaller campus area compared to other institutions, these events and activities contribute significantly to enriching student life at FAST.

One of the aspects I adore about FAST Lahore is the presence of numerous cats on campus. These cats are well taken care of by both the faculty and the students, creating a warm and welcoming environment. Their presence adds a unique charm to the campus atmosphere, and it’s heartwarming to see the community come together to ensure their well-being. I've even named one of the cats Coco, and it has become a delightful part of my daily routine to interact with her. Watching the cats roam freely and being cared for so affectionately by everyone around is truly a testament to the nurturing and compassionate spirit of the FAST Lahore community.

Reflection

Being a Student at FAST-NU is as Challenging as it is rewarding. I simply love the diverse set of opportunities to grow, to shine and to connect with those around you. Creating a balance between your academic and social life here may seem difficult at first but once you get your grip on it you will start enjoying your time here, At least that was the case for me.

Conclusion

That’s a wrap on a typical day in my life as a FAST-NU student. From early morning classes to the hustle of academic life, and the vibrant social interactions, being here is a journey of growth and learning. I hope this gives you a glimpse into the dynamic and spirited community we have at FAST Lahore. Whether you’re a prospective student or just curious about life at FAST, I hope this post has been insightful and inspiring. Stay tuned for more stories and experiences from my journey here!
